Limp mode, or Reduced Power Mode, is a self preservation feature where the vehicle's ECU drastically limits engine speed and performance. This is triggered when a blocked DPF causes excessive exhaust back pressure, which could otherwise cause catastrophic engine damage.

It is a clear sign that your DPF is critically blocked and requires immediate professional diagnostic work. Driving in limp mode is not recommended.

The differential pressure sensor measures the pressure before and after the DPF to calculate the soot loading. If this sensor fails or its pipework is blocked, it will send incorrect data to the ECU.

The ECU may then fail to trigger regeneration when needed, or trigger it unnecessarily. A faulty sensor can easily be misdiagnosed as a blocked DPF, making accurate diagnostics essential before any repair.

In extreme cases, a DPF can become so blocked that the intense heat from a forced regeneration cycle or an underlying engine fault can crack the internal ceramic filter or even melt it. This kind of physical damage is terminal for the filter.

At this point, repair is not possible, and the only options are an expensive replacement or a permanent DPF delete service.

We often see vehicles with recurring DPF problems even after expensive main dealer repairs. Dealers often default to replacing the DPF unit, which can cost thousands, without fully diagnosing the root cause of the original failure.
