Dorking's position on the A24 and at the foot of the Surrey Hills, including the famous Box Hill, means vehicles here face a mix of commuter traffic, rural driving, and challenging hill climbs. This variety of use places unique stresses on an engine's EGR system.
The combination of slow town driving in Dorking, steady A24 commuting, and the labour-intensive hill climbs around Box Hill creates a difficult environment for EGR valves. Soot builds up during low-load driving and can then cause the valve to stick when more power is demanded for hills, leading to performance issues and faults for many RH4 motorists.
The EGR faults we see most often on cars and vans in Dorking and surrounding postcodes.
The most common sign of a problem is an engine management light or a specific EGR warning light on your dashboard. This means the vehicle's ECU has detected a fault in the system.
The fault could be an incorrect gas flow rate or a valve position that does not match what the ECU expects.
If the EGR valve is stuck open, exhaust gases will constantly flow into the intake manifold. This starves the engine of oxygen, leading to incomplete combustion.
Symptoms include a significant loss of power, black smoke from the exhaust, rough idling, and poor fuel efficiency.
When the valve sticks in the closed position, it stops the recirculation of exhaust gases entirely. While this might not cause immediate performance loss, it leads to higher combustion temperatures.
This can increase NOx emissions and may cause the engine to run hotter than designed.
Soot and carbon from diesel exhaust are the primary enemies of the EGR system. This sticky buildup can clog the EGR valve, the EGR cooler, and the intake manifold itself.
A blockage restricts airflow, reduces boost pressure, and will severely impact engine performance.
The EGR cooler can fail internally, causing coolant to leak into the exhaust system or exhaust gas to leak into the cooling system. Symptoms include unexplained coolant loss, white smoke from the exhaust, and potential engine overheating.
This should be addressed immediately to prevent serious engine damage.
When the ECU detects a serious EGR fault, it may put the vehicle into 'limp mode'. This is a protective measure that drastically reduces engine power to prevent further damage.
It limits engine speed and acceleration, making the car very difficult to drive.
An inconsistent EGR valve operation can disrupt the air and fuel mixture, especially at low engine speeds. This often results in a rough or unstable idle, engine hesitation when you accelerate, and a general feeling that the car is not running smoothly.
A faulty EGR system, particularly one that is stuck open, leads to inefficient engine combustion. Your engine has to work harder and burn more fuel to produce the required power.
This results in a noticeable decrease in miles per gallon, costing you money at the pump.
Every one of these trouble codes is something we resolve by blanking, replacing, or permanently deleting the EGR and remapping the ECU. If your scan tool is showing one of these, we can help.
Your code not listed above? We almost certainly still fix it. Send your registration and the code to WhatsApp for a fast answer.

The most common things customers ask us before we visit.
Any emissions-related modification can affect your manufacturer warranty. We keep your original software on file so the change can be reversed before a dealer visit. Discuss your situation with us before booking.
EGR valves pass hot exhaust gas back through the intake to lower combustion temperature. On short trips the system never gets hot enough to burn the soot off, which leaves a sticky layer of carbon on the valve and intake ports. Over time the valve sticks or blocks entirely.
Usually yes. Call or message with your postcode and registration and we confirm a time slot.
No. In our experience chemical cleans are short-lived on a valve that has already failed. We go direct to a proper diagnostic, then either replace the component or fit a blanking plate with a software delete for a permanent fix.
Depends on the job. A diagnostic-only visit is a fixed fee. A full EGR blank and software delete is a fixed price per vehicle family. Replacement parts are extra where needed. We quote before any work starts.
A physical EGR delete on a road registered vehicle is an MoT failure from 2018 onwards because visible emissions-related tampering is checked. We explain the implications in plain English before any work begins and document your instructions in writing.
